The District of 撸奶社区and 撸奶社区Nation are developing a master plan for the 撸奶社区River dike in the Siy铆ch'em Reserve and eagle viewing area along Government Road in Brackendale.
"This is an opportunity for the public to help shape an important asset within our community 鈥� one which provides critical flood protection to many residents and businesses, and also sees a significant volume of visitor traffic for eagle viewing among other things,鈥� said Mayor Karen Elliott, in a news release. 鈥淥ur collaboration with the 撸奶社区Nation and our community are integral to the success of this design process and we want to hear about the values of the area that are important to you as we create this plan.鈥�

Due to the deficiencies in this section of the dike, which includes a history of seepage and piping issues, the master plan is a recommendation of the District鈥檚 Integrated Flood Hazard Management Plan.
The master plan will consider possible dike alignments and other flood protection options, according to the release.
鈥淭he dike plays an instrumental role in ensuring the safety of 撸奶社区Nation members and neighbouring residents. By collaborating with the District of 撸奶社区on this dike master plan project, we are taking a government-to-government approach to public engagement that will ensure our community鈥檚 knowledge and perspectives are reflected in the final plan,鈥� said Khelsilem, 撸奶社区Nation councillor and spokesperson. 鈥淭he restoration and protection of habitat around the dike will remain a top priority for the Nation throughout the planning process.鈥�
The project is funded through a $270,000 National Disaster Mitigation Program grant awarded to the District of Squamish.
