TikToker illegally explores old BC Ferries vessel in Richmond repair yard

BC Ferries is considering "additional measures" to their safety protocols.

BC Ferries is working with Richmond RCMP after a TikToker posted a video of them illegally exploring an old vessel in BC Ferries' Richmond repair yard.

In a TikTok video by user Searchingwest, clips are shown of an individual walking in the BC Ferries fleet maintenance yard and approaching a mothballed ferry.

The TikTok shows the deteriorating outdoor deck, broken chairs, tables and exposed ceilings in the old Coastal Cafe area, and a torn apart Kids Zone.

BC Ferries senior communications advisor Shiryn Sayani said they are aware of the video and are "actively reviewing the circumstances."

"The site is private property, and any unauthorized access to our facilities or vessels is taken very seriously," said Sayani. She added the incident has been reported to the Richmond RCMP and they are working with them on the investigation.

When asked about security measures of the site, Sayani said they have specific protocols in place but are looking at "whether any additional measures are needed."

BC Ferries is discouraging anyone from attempting to access restricted areas for both safety and legal reasons.

"This is trespassing on private property, and it’s not just illegal, it’s dangerous. These sites aren’t designed for the public, and trying to explore them puts people at risk and can interfere with safety and operations."
